David Letterman Apologizes
After a week of the media bending over backwards to explain David Letterman’s meaning, Letterman apologized for real, almost.
I noticed he had to go on about ‘perceptions’ as if the perceptions of Letterman were not his own fault:
It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke.
.
This is the original problem, not the joke. Nobody invented a perception of Letterman. Letterman messed up, and tried to weasel out of it. The press went hostile on Palin, and she never backed down. Now Letterman has mostly caved because an advertiser pulled some money on him.
So after a week of weaseling, David Letterman has apologized for the most part. He had to explain the perceptions part, and I would say the same rule applies to apologies as to jokes. Now we are all waiting for the media to admit they shouldn’t have carried Letterman’s water while they attacked Palin. This very technique of a liberal mouthpiece sitting back while the press does the dirty work is the exact model used to get Barack Obama elected, every time in his life.
